My Tiny House Adventure
I have been a very Busy Bee this year! Last year, my husband and I were contemplating “tiny house” living and this year we made it a reality. The adventure has proved to be more than just a fun project, it has been a lifestyle change. Planning the project was a ton of fun and offered a few challenges. The both of us had our own ideas and new space “must haves”. We needed a sleeping area, working kitchen, larger bathroom vanity, washer/dryer, a comfortable sitting area and storage… all within 325 square feet. With a lot of discussion and penciling it out, we’ve designed a beautiful living space we call home.
Here is what I learned during the process.
Downsizing is not compromising
It’s all about making smart choices and realizing what you want.
Reinvent your living space
Invest in furniture pieces that work for the space, utilizing every square inch. Choose furniture that offers built in storage to cut back on clutter. Keep what you love and figure out how to work those items into the design plan.
Consider going RETRO on the appliances
For our kitchen this meant using an under counter fridge, a compact Breville style oven and a 2 burner cooktop.
Make your walls work overtime
Using a neutral paint color on the walls gives you a clean palette to work with. Add shelving everywhere: in the closet, in the kitchen, in the bathroom, and floating drawers. These are all great for small spaces. Place all the lighting on the walls or in the ceilings. Wall scones are a definite space saver, as well as ceiling lights.
We are going to finish the exterior of the house this fall, when the weather cools off a bit. We will be adding a screened-in porch, rebuilding the potting shed and adding some walkways. I’ll keep you posted.
Until next time,
Justina
